Turning a old laptop into a local server

Overview

So, during the making of the VotV video, I ran out of diskspace, BAD

21 gigs free at best out of 3/4 of a TB.

So, I found a really nice guide!

Tools & Prep

All you need to use it yourself is:

  • Internet
you probably have it reading this
  • A spare laptop/old pc: over a gig of ram is usually the only thing you should worry about
  • A usb stick over 16 gigs

Step-by-step

First I got Lubuntu

I didn't use ubuntu server, because for some reason, grub for the install stick never properly setup, and i really lack knowledge in grub.
Also, I think this laptop would struggle I'm afraid.

Install the stuff

OpenSSH, ZeroTier (because TailScale is banned in russia), and a recompiled AmneziaWG build, so it supports the anchient pre 2015 AMD CPU in this poor thing.
Oh, and also CasaOS is super nice if you just want a simple GUI to click around in.

Compiling AmneziaWG to support the older CPU structure

Notes

You will have a significantly easier time, due to having less intenet blocks! Use TailScale and/or WireGuard for connecting remotely!
Also the guide tells in detail how to setup easy media streaming and a bunch of other neat stuff!
