100 Webmaster Questions

This is my answers to the 100 questions for webmasters from mouseling.net.

1. Please introduce yourself.: i am shpeck. i do stuff on the computer that looks cool i hope.
2. How long have you been making websites?: this is my first and only (so far) website. i started in march 2026
3. And what got you into the hobby?: the youtube video from the owner of onio.club.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?: personal websites. seeing some one be passionate about any topic is what keeps me going.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?: i plan everything before writing a single line of code.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.: Voices of the Void, and just old cgi in general i guess.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?: Definetly the css.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?: JS. By a LONG SHOT. i hate this thing, but you can do so much with it. basically forced to learn it lol.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?: I currently have the layout from sadgrl's layout builder but, i plan to make unique layouts for every page.
10. How confident are you with CSS?: Pretty confident, i can basically make anything i want in a reasonable amount of time.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?: nope
12. What is your favourite HTML element?: <a>. when you think about it, its what connects all the pages on the internet. its the singly most important element in html.
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?: write out the html layout.
14. Do you know JavaScript?: barely.
15. How about PHP?: i had prior experience with it, but its been so long, i probably forgot everything
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?: yes
17. Are you more focused on content or design?: i try to be focused on the content, but when making the page it actually becomes the design
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?: no, but id love to.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?: they are awesome, they make me remember
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?: prboably not, idk
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?: they are awesome, they sprinkle in some of your site's personality on other sites, possibly enticing any passer by to check out your site aswell.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?: they are awesome, its like seeing a crowd of people, but they are all whatever look they want to be.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?: id stick to the same there, but probably talk about diffrent stuff, maybe
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?: yes, i see such cool website all the time
25. What text editor do you use?: VSCodium
26. Why do you use that one?: its easier to disable all the ai slop in that, i think at least
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?: i host it on here, dont really need to host it externally, the whole website is under 40 mb right now, and i can probably make it lower.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?: i think, that it doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things, use whatever you feel comfortable with.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?: i think its around 40 mb
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?: yes.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?: i like both, both are nice. sometimes you just want a good read, and sometimes you just want go "woah.."
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?: yes. on purpose.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?: nope, never, this is very fun.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?: i talk with a few people once in a while.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?: no, i dont really go advertising it, if they ask "what do you do in your free time" then sometimes i tell that i work on this site.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?: no, not that ofter, but not rarely either. usualy once every 1-2 weeks
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?: i want to, someday sit down and redo everything, but the way it is right now, it works perfectly fine
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?: its a 50/50 split between me and my hobbies
39. Do you do web design professionally?: no
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?: i dont think i would like that, because i would dread working on any html/css. im still in university, so i dont really have that much time to work.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?: no
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?: i try my best, and warn people when a link links to social media, incase they dont want to look at it.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?: I talk to my real life friends/family through Telegram, but online friends are mostly all on discord. despite my hatered for discord and killing online forums and then trying to halfass them into their app and calling it a day
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?: Yes, Devon Hendryx is my go to, but i listen to some Miles Davis and Masayoshi Takanaka here and there.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?: I currently have one website, but that might change in the near future.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?: Many topics, im a multifaceted kinda guy, so i have a lot of stuff to write about.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?: I present my real self. All that i change is the way i refer to myself.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?: no, not yet. i am sure that is soon to change.
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?: I dont think i have enough experience to argure with the way they currently work.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?: I dont think this applies in the way i see websites, people that are making a personal website, they make it the way they seem fit. Its their vision and who am i to tell them what to do.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?: same answer as 50.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?: not much, but i use some of them. most of my stuff is just div's with a style lol.
53. Do you consider different browsers?: I really like SeaMonkey, but it never really worked proper for me, but i wish it did.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.: Firefox. I use it because i can easily send tabs between my phone and laptop back and forth. I can do it through LocalSend aswell, but its a lot easier through firefox
55. And what OS are you on?: Sadly still windows 11
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?: I hate windows and the way microsoft is handling it. The ONLY thing keeping me on it is after effects. If there were a proper open source (or not, idc at this point)alternative for linux, im outta there.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?: I try my best to keep this site that way.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?: As long as there's no audio, go ahead.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?: They are a cool way to intereact. I am in the no ai ring.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?: I guess you could say i do, with the VotV page, but its moreso just about the game in general.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?: I guess not, it seems pretty generic to me, but i hope my style is enough to make visitors not think about that.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?: It's a website anyone can visit and get inspired to start creating. I am working towards that, by making cool stuff and in my projects telling how i did what, and describing the process.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?: I am a self taugh artist yes. I did most of the stuff on here myself.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?: 32bit.cafe is awesome.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?: procrastination
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?: Don't worry about how good your site is! Everyone started as a complete noob at first, and the passing for learning everything is what lead all of them to where they are today. Look at other peoples sites for inspiration, look at their code to learn how to do certain things.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?: It's all over the place, some are in my .css and some are on the page itself.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?: I never had any experience with it yet, so im not to say.
69. How about table-based layouts?: Once again, im not to say. The layout i have is from a generator, so my ignorance is bliss(?)
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?: I use a two column layout, and i love it.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?: CSS
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.: No, never, my style is part of me.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?: No, i only make layouts the second i need one.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?: id say im still closer to the beginner side of the spectrum. i think my style is carrying the website to make it look cooler than it is.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?: No, but it would be a good habit to develop.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?: HTML for people and 32bit.cafe are both great resources for anyone new to website making to learn.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?: No, i dont have that kinda power yet.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?: they are pretty cool.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?: %. If i need the precision, then px
80. Do you have a favourite font?: Share Tech Mono (and no, not because of VotV)
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?: Maybe. I guess we would have seprate pages.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?: no, neocities has accumilated them very nicely
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?: I barely use bookmarks in my browser lol. I would feel honored, that someone finds my stuff so interesting the have the intent to come back often.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?: The visual novel-esque intro. Idea came to me at 3am, as all good ideas do, and yep, it is.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?: Yes, custom keyboards are such a cool scene, 3d is a big topic, and after effects is a rabbithole of its own, that i dont see much people knowing exists.
86. How often and for how long are you online?: 24/7 all 52 weeks of the year (not really but you get the point, the internet is a big part of my life)
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?: Someone who is interested in creating, learning and just wants to see cool stuff.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?: considering that i have to look up what it is, i think the answer is no.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?: I am working on stuff here and there, but most of it is for uni. And no, i have never made a program for my website.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?: I think that is pretty cool. I have never used one, and never will, but seems like a nice tool to have.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?: No, i dont really see a point, but also neocities keeps a rough estimate on it.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?: Yes. rutracker, because piracy lol.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?: Yes, almost always straight from my brain into the editor.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?: I think i do. No they dont say that...
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?: Yes, my old youtube, was just a "funny moments" video but with barely any editing. I have privated everything from that.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?: I would leave it up. I have stuff here id like to preserve and also some of the projects on here might help other people.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?: No, i try to keep everything about myself private.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?: I dont have a "best online friend", i talk to lots of people and its hard to decide, who is the "best one copared to all the other ones".
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?: I don't, but i should.
